Product Description See how the brain works while using it in the process of reading this book! Most of us have no idea what's really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know - like that physical activity boosts your brain power. How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget - and so important to repeat new information? Is it true that men and women have different brains? In "Brain Rules", Dr. John Medina, a molecular biologist, shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule - what scientists know for sure about how our brains work - and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives.Medina's fascinating stories and sense of humour breathe life into brain science. You'll learn why Michael Jordan was no good at baseball. You'll peer over a surgeon's shoulder as he proves that we have a Jennifer Aniston neuron. You'll meet a boy who has an amazing memory for music but can't tie his own shoes.
Interesting overviewJuly 19, 2010 Jane Rosenthal(Los Angeles, CA) This book is an interesting read. I didn't learn anything new, but it did read nicely and I would suggest it as a good overview into learning. It's told in a readable, likable way - kind of similar feeling to reading Malcolm Gladwell or Freakanomics...it is a lite tretment of the topic, but intersting nonetheless.
Brain Plasticity Made EasyJuly 6, 2010 A. B. Pontecorvo(Eastsound, WA) The book arrived earlier than anticipated, a new product. It reads well and the information presented is presented in straight forward fashion tro be useful at many levels.Your Brain: The Missing Manual
Complex brain research made easyJuly 6, 2010 Joshua Mauthe(Nashville, TN) Brain Rules is about nothing more than the brain itself - how it works, how it stores memories, how it processes information, and more. It takes on modern research, scientific theory, and academic matters. And here's the joy of it: it takes all that intricate, complex material, and spins it into accessible, compelling material that anyone can enjoy. As a teacher, I found the book fascinating for its insights into the way the mind works, but I can't think of anyone who wouldn't find the material useful or intriguing. Medina boils down the book to 12 simple "rules," with topics ranging from memory to vision, from gender to exploration, and in doing so makes a staggering amount of information easily comprehensible and digestible. Don't let the subject matter dissuade you from this one; this is a fantastic book, one whose insights and information will benefit anyone who has to work with other people at any time in their life. Really, really fascinating stuff that has already made me think about so much that I do in a very different way.
Brain RulesJuly 1, 2010 joannsunash Fascinating book - well written for a non technical reader. Have heard Dr. Medina speak at the WP&BC, Seattle, April 2010 and he used one of the important points he discusses in the book to keep anyone from falling asleep or tuning him out. I will be incorporating the idea into my training/education classes. A must read book for anyone who wants to understand how brain functioning is enhanced by exercise. Lots of easily understood ideas for business and home.
It's OK. Somewhat interesting but not groundbreaking.June 22, 2010 Jaewoo Kim(Santa Monica, CA) This book expounds on how our brain learns and functions. It has many tidbits of facts about our brain, such as the vastness and complexity of our brain's neural network, that is entertaining and intriguing.
But after reading this book, I asked myself "how has this book improved my life and understanding of the world?"
This book has one singular advice which is priceless: regular exercise has a profound impact on the health and functioning of your brain. Simply put, if you don't exercise, you are probably not on top of your mental agility whereas regular exercise, especially cardio, very substantially increases the efficacy of your brain power.
The author also expounds on how our brain learns and how it changes as we grow older.
This book reminds me of a watered-down version of Cognitive Psychology textbook I had read in college. It is interesting in its own right. But as a practical tool to improve your life, it has only limited value.
If you are looking for a well-informed book on your brain and cognitive psychology, then I recommend this book. If you are looking for a cutting edge brain research and breakthroughs that can change your life, it may leave you wanting.
