Product Description
Featuring more than 250 photographs and 50 anatomical drawings, Deep Tissue Massage is the standard guide to the essentials of touch, biomechanics, and positioning options for a multitude of strategies to treat all major conditions encountered in a bodywork practice.

The book is divided into three sections. “Fundamentals” covers basic skills of palpation, explaining the deeper layers of the body and presenting detailed instruction on working with these layers to release tension. This section gives clear information on the proper use of knuckles, fist, forearms, and elbows in preventing injury to the therapist. “Strategies” offers more precise protocols and treatment plans for the entire body with emphasis on client positioning options to stretch muscles rather than just kneading tissues. “Caveats” details areas in which the practitioner needs to exercise caution.

Deep Tissue Massage presents a wealth of information in a way the therapist can immediately utilize. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and includes a preface to the new edition, a foreword, an index, a Suggested Reading list, and extended sections on integrating deep-tissue massage into bodywork practice and the psychology of treating injuries.

3 out of 5 stars good with DVD   July 20, 2010
seabreeze
Nice graphics and photos. Without DVD, it offers not much to lean how-to part. To me, the book doesn't work much without DVD, which is very costly. To compare with other books of this area, this book is little expensive for the content. The method itself seems to be very good.

5 out of 5 stars Best Deep Tissue Massage Guide (and an easy read too)   May 26, 2010
M. Palmer (Los Angeles, CA)
The team of magnificent minds that compiled this text should never stop writing books. This book can be read (and understood) by recent graduates, experienced professional massage therapists and otherwise interested parties alike. So intuitive and descriptive in nature, some of the best of the best have recommended this text during their own seminars and teachings! If it's as `they' say, "the best compliment is to be recommended and recognized by your peers", then Mr. Riggs has masterfully renovated his literature and has accomplished wide spread industry acclaim.

Securing this book is a refreshing update or first time purchase and is absolutely complete. Meagan R. Holub's "The Magic Touch: How to make $100,000 per year as a massage Therapist" is a recommendation that is easily a `must have' resource too. The Magic Touch has a chapter solely based on the Do's and Don'ts of successful (100k) making holistic pro's. Meagan's experience is a fully fledged engaging read for professionals of all sorts. Buy both books, now!

This book is great! I am disappointed that as it progresses it has reference to a dvd where the stuff is shown in motion. IT has a DVD chapter and second counter so that you can find the techniques on the DVD.... Only there isnt a DVD....

5 out of 5 stars Great book!   February 18, 2010

I knew very little about massage therapy or the muscular structures in a human body. I bought this book along with a portable massage table to help with my wife's fibromyalgia.
This book does use some advanced terms, but overall, it is very easy to read and to follow.
Great pictures and procedural advice.
