5 out of 5 stars Don't worry about a little dampness!   March 21, 2010

My Kindle arrived yesterday by UPS and sat in its box on my front porch for hours during a rainstorm. When I finally discovered it the entire package was soaking wet. I thought, "Oh no, oh no," the whole time I peeled off the sodden cardboard and squished the Kindle out of the styrofoam packaging. I carefully unfolded the instructions and set them on edge so they would dry. I then wiped off the Kindle with the nearest kitchen towel, turned it on, and got on with the rest of my life. It appears to be doing everything it is supposed to do and nothing it's not supposed to do. Although the packaging was entirely soaked, the Kindle seems to be completely unharmed. I wouldn't recommend dropping it in the bathtub, but certainly would never worry about slopping a bit of coffee on it. I immediately bought a few books, started reading, and became an even happier camper than I was pre-Kindle. It took me no time at all to get used to the feel of it, and I love being able to turn the page from either side of the device. It's easy for me to handle with either hand which is important because I do a lot of my reading in a heated waterbed, turn the furnace way down at night, and am always wanting to put one hand or the other under the covers to keep it warm. And I especially love the dictionary feature. I've always been the kind of reader who encounters words I don't know, wish I wasn't too lazy to go get the dictionary, and then almost never go back to look them up. I'm looking forward to increasing my already intimidating and voluminous vocabulary.

If you are reading these reviews and trying to decide whether to sink your hard-earned into a Kindle, hesitate no more! I wondered whether I really, really wanted one for a couple of years before I took the plunge. I didn't think when that time came that plunge would be into dripping wet packaging, but life always sends us little surprises. I am going to love being able to take not just a book but a library with me wherever I go.

5 out of 5 stars kindle is great   March 21, 2010

Our Kindle - 6" screen - is spot on - hundreds of books downloaded, plus you can transfer files from your computer to read on the Kindle. The Whispernet service works fine - hundreds of thousands of books available through Amazon, and many are free. No regrets - glad we purchased Kindle, and prefer the smaller size for easier mobility.

I love my Kindle. It holds its charge for a long long time. It is comfortable to read with and the book selection is great. I am really picky, I wish searching was a little faster and easier, but other than that it is great!

5 out of 5 stars Kindle is a Great Gadget   March 21, 2010

The Kindle 6" is quite possibly my favorite gadget ever and I've owned a few gadgets in my time. It's not that it does a million and one things it's that it does one thing so very well. I was skeptical of the Kindle when it first came out. What brought me around was the fact that I travel to very obscure and remote places for months at a time and bringing along a collection of books makes my baggage heavy. If I order a book it takes weeks to get to me. The Kindle just made practical sense. Only three functions I would like added: WiFi, WiFi and WiFi. I guess I say that because where I go there is no 3G or Edge network within a thousand miles. My tough luck, I guess. I just download them to my laptop and then sync them to the Kindle. Takes just a few minutes for the whole process.
The design is streamlined and elegant. It's small size doesn't draw attention to itself. Take it to the coffee shop all you want; let the laptop users continue to get giggled at. Nobody will notice you and your Kindle. Bottom line, the Kindle is an excellent device that does what it's supposed to do and looks classy while doing it. I advise every serious reader to check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!   March 21, 2010

This is a great product! You can put pdf's and format them with calibre if you think the original pdf file doesn't fit well (I convert case law pdf files from westlaw or lexis and they look and work great!). Also, it has good contrast, even under bright sunlight ( I've used it in the beach in Puerto Rico). I love that one can access gmail and facebook almost anywhere in the world for free!! (Recently used it in Madrid, Spain and several cities in Israel). So, overall it is the best product out there!! The only thing is I would like it to be touchscreen so I could jot down (in handwriting) notes, but thats just from a students point of view : ) .
