quick and fun October 12, 2009 C. Wise (chicago, Illinois) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Sookie is back in one volume of short stories. I read this in just a few hours so it was not as satifying as an entire novel, but I loved this insight into Sookie and some of the minor characters that we have met in the novels. Eric acting like a little boy waiting for Dracula is so much fun and a new look into his character. He can always count on Sookie to bring him back to earth though. I especially loved the last stoy where Sookie gets a special gift from her great grandfather. After the last novel, it makes him seem more human and Sookie's independent side gets sidelined.

First, let me say that I adore True Blood. It's one of my all-time favorite shows. However, I'd never read any Charlene Harris before that. Too bad for me! Wow--I really, really got into this book. I think it was the perfect introduction to this talented author. Firstly, her main character, Sookie, is just so great. She's complex and interesting and really touches the reader with her vunerabilities--which, of course, is the recipe for a great character. Bill is good too, though sometimes, he can be a little overbearing. But the show is about Sookie and so is the books. All I can say is that if you are looking for a good book to read that will introduce you into this great, new, vampire world, I don't think you can go wrong with this one. Just my opinion. I also would recommend Dead Sexy Vampire Erotica: Two Dark and Thirsty Stories.
Nice way to get the complete collection; most of the stories are forgettable though October 11, 2009 K. Eckert (Minneapolis, MN) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is collection of 5 short stories featuring Sookie; "Fairy Dust," "One Word Answer," "Dracula Night," "Lucky," and "Giftwrap." If you are someone who faithfully reads all of the Sookie Stackhouse short stories in previously released anthologies; then you can skip this book completely. I personally had only read "Dracula Night" which was released in the "Many Bloody Returns" anthology. This book was okay and a super quick read.
Personally I didn't like "Fairy Dust" and "One Word Answer" all that much. I thought these two stories were kind of boring. I had already read "Dracula Night" and I thought that one was okay. The two stories that stood out in this anthology for me were "Lucky" and "Giftwrap". Both of those were very entertaining and "Giftwrap" added a little to Sookie's background.
Even if you haven't read any of these stories elsewhere I wouldn't buy this book new; I would either get it from the library or buy it used. It is super short, maybe took me 1-2 hours to read all of the stories. I didn't think any of them really added a lot of understanding or background to Sookie's character. I guess if you are an absolute die-hard Sookie fan you might want this book for your collection, or if you really need to get your Sookie fix before the next book comes out.
Overall the book was okay, but most of the stories are forgettable. It's a good way to get all the Sookie short stories if you really want to read them.
Not quite complete, but a good addition October 11, 2009 Jennifer Lee (Central Florida) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
First of all, come on people, do you not read product descriptions before you purchase things? Even the Amazon title says "A Touch of Dead (Sookie Stackhouse: The Complete Stories". STORIES. As in "short stories." Giving this book one star simply because it's exactly what it says it is is absolutely ludicrous.
That said, I'm glad I got this book. I had read all but two of the stories before, in various anthologies, and I'm glad to have them collected into one volume that I can stick on the shelf with the rest of my Sookie collection. "One Word Answer" is especially a story that's pretty vital to the series as a whole, since it details the fate that befell Hadley (the aftermath of which is dealt with in Definitely Dead: A Sookie Stackhouse Novel (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood). The other stories were fun little snippets of life with Sookie, and I loved reading and re-visiting them.
I do wish it were a little more "complete" as the title says. While these may be all the anthology stories that feature Sookie herself, there are others that take place in the Sookieverse that were left out. Sean and Layla's story is detailed in a great story called "Dancers in the Dark" which features in the anthology Night's Edge: Dancers in the DarkHer Best EnemySomeone Else's Shadow. It's a very sweet, exciting, romantic story, and it would have been great to have it in this collection, especially as they have a cameo appearance in All Together Dead (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 7). And there are at least two more I remember reading - one about a female vampire and one about weres - that take place in the same "universe". Why not throw in those stories too, to make this book a more complete "Sookieverse" anthology? I think the hardback cover price would be a little more justified then, without having to use such a large font to increase the page count.
So all in all, I'm glad I got this, but I'm a little disappointed because it could have been much more than it is.
A delightful "sip" of Sookie! October 11, 2009 AtlantaSassyBelle (Atlanta, GA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Kudos to Charlaine Harris and her publishers for working to get all the previously published Sookie Stackhouse-centric short stories published in one book. Many of the previous anthologies or compilations were out of print and in some cases you had to buy them for ridiculous prices on eBay (I knew one person who bought a used copy of BITE before it was republished for over $50 just to read "One Word Answer"!) Going for a year between each Sookie book can be a LONG time so its a wonderful treat to be able to sit down and have a whole book of previously published (and hard to find) short stories to read. Yes, there will be more Sookie short stories in the future, but this one wraps has the bonus of including the ONE essential Sookie Short Story that everyone always wants to read. "One Word Answer" explains the mystery of Sookie's cousin, Hadley's death and is a good segue before the events of DEFINITELY DEAD. This is an excellent purchase for anyone who wanted to fill that gap in the time line or felt like they missed a book in the series. Plus you get 4 other awesome short stories!!
For those of you who wondered - Charlaine's website also clearly defined what would be in "A Touch of Dead" here: [...]
