Amazing! Beautiful! Inspiring! August 19, 2010 Elle 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm not a compulsive eater, but like any woman, I've had weight troubles here and there. Fortunately, this book is about MUCH more than food, and although I consider myself to be on a continual spiritual quest, there were moments where I felt uncomfortable. Right. I gave the book the highest rating, even though it made me cringe a bit. I can understand low marks coming from those who expected another weight loss book, because that's not what this is. Ms. Roth is addressing the GOD WITHIN US. She is showing us the way to never diet again, not because her "plan" will make people lose weight, but because 'finding yourself' will naturally lead to weight loss. This is not a nutritional guide, people. Do we really need anyone else to point out facts about calories, fast food, etc.? I'm pretty sure that's covered. I could completely understand a person not even being READY for this idea yet. Like I said, there were uncomfortable moments for me because this books digs deep, deep down inside you, reaching something beyond fat and food problems. Anyone would benefit from this, as everyone uses something to escape what's really going on. My review sounds rambling, as does the book sometimes, but to benefit from the concept, the reader MUST embrace what's being presented, then go with it, even if it's painful to hear. The truth hurts sometimes, but in the end, we all know that's what is best for us.
Not what I expected August 19, 2010 Denise Broussard (New Iberia, LA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I find like most self-help books, the majority of the book talks about the problem. Every possible aspect of the problem and what others experience from the problem and on and on and on. I knew more about the problem than I wanted to know before I read the book and now, if that's possible, I know more.
I really hate these types of books - we know about the problem, that's why we are buying the book. I want to know what to do about it -
Give me the steps, the processes, the bottom line - I'm just about finished with the book and I still don't feel any closer to knowing how to balance my life, food & God (title). I expected a little more in terms of physical steps or mental steps, something besides chewing my food slowly and "thinking" about all the other stuff going on as the reason that I'm eating - to stop eating when I am not hungry.
I also didn't or haven't really gotten where God fits into all of this, other than mediating.
I'm sure this book as helped many people, and it has some good insight. For me, I've read all this before, and it offered no new insights to my personal struggles of eating when I'm not hungry!
Good But Lacking in Critical Areas August 18, 2010 Michelle Scott 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm reading this book for a second time and yet I rate it as only a 1 Star. Why? The book is excellent in helping discover truths about the root causes of overeating and other compulsions. I rate it a 5 star in it's relevance to women. But as a book about God, I can only give it a 0 Star. This book is NOT about God and should NOT have God in the title. The author, who is obviously intelligent, has the skills and discipline to learn the truth about many things. I was hopeful that this book would have solid truths about God as the title implies. It did not. God makes Himself known to those who diligently seek Him. Even the descriptions of heaven and hell were juvenile and irrelevant. Still, I'm glad I read the book, I just had to filter out many things. I would caution other readers, however, that this book is not about God in anyway, shape or form. It will help you with compulsive overeating.
