1 out of 5 stars Great hardware, terrible system   September 5, 2010

I am seriously considering returning my Kindle DX. not because of any defect in the hardware - the Kindle itself is great. Battery lasts for the promised week, turning pages goes (mostly) fast, pdfs are displayed flawlessly and subscriptions just appear when they become available.

But.

I can't use it with the Kindle services. I refuse to buy books for about the price of a paperback, but not be able to keep this book. It stays on Amazon's servers and if Amazon wants to they can delete it. Also if I switched to another service (Nook, Sony ebook readers, anything else) I can't take my books with me. This is plain ridiculous. Arguing that DRM is implemented to stop piracy is stupid as I found tons of 'free' pdfs while searching for a bookstore that offers DRM-free books. (For tech-related books O'Reilly is a good address.. )
Similar stupidity with subscriptions. Firstly they are more expensive in Europe than in the US (by about a factor 2 sometimes), secondly I only get to keep the 7 most recent editions! This is outrageous! Granted, I can choose 'keep this issue' on my Kindle, thereby saving this particular issue on the Kindle, but if the Kindle is stolen, lost or just replaced all the issues stored on it are gone as well (and no, a backup to my computer doesn't help due to stupid DRM).

I just can't understand why anyone would by any ebooks or electronic subscriptions from Amazon as long as such practices are in place..

4 out of 5 stars The joy of a nice e-reader   September 5, 2010

The hype of the IPAD raised my awareness level on electronic readers and when I looked into it and did a head to head comparison, I decided to buy the Kindle DX. I chose the DX because it was a better reader based on the following:

- lighter
- easier to read
- longer battery life
- less expensive books

The readability is outstanding and it has rejuvenated my interest in reading because it is so easy to take around. The other thing that I just love is that I don't have to plug it in every night. I have enough devices like that so it's a real treat to have a good electronic toy that you can use a lot and get more than a week out of. It would be nice if you could reference what page you were on somehow and get a more accurate reading on remaining battery life, but I'm thrilled with the purchase and would highly recommend it to anyone.

The Kindle book store works well. Good value for books but expensive for newspapers compared to what you would pay for a home subscription which doesn't make much sense to me. It's a little complicated to figure out how to share books across multiple Kindles in the same house but that's ahead of me to figure out.

In hindsight, I wish I'd discovered these a long time ago. Get on the bandwagon if you're not already on it. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Kindle   September 5, 2010

I loved the product. The graphite looks very nice, and the metallic back is great too. Very good contrast, and the big screen is good to read manga, too (mangas looks 'bigger' on kindle than the printed 8.1" version). Turning speed is good for me, and the battery is up for a week, and it's on 75%.

The 'bad' is no custom screensavers, but I think they'll put on a software update.

This Kindle DX is simply wonderful. I am very happy that I do have it, I truly enjoy reading with it and have not missed the physical feel of the books. I also like the now of getting the books immediately. I have yet to explore all of it. It is everything they say it is.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my Mom's life--Worth every penny of the cost!   September 5, 2010

I purchased Kindle DX for my 95 year old mother who loves to read but has failing eyesight. It has changed her life! She was struggling with a magnifying glass trying to read the absurdly small and light-colored typefaces in paperback books. She had given up entirely on reading -- a pastime that fills a great deal of her day and brings her much enjoyment. I purchased the Kindle DX with the larger screen as I thought it would allow her to see more text on a page at a large type size. My only concern was that she would find it difficult to maneuver the buttons, or that the size would be cumbersome or heavy as she is a very petite & somewhat fragile lady. After about 15 minutes of instruction, she was reading her first book. I purchase and set the book up for her and really all she has to do is press the button to turn the page and slide the switch at the top when it goes to "sleep" mode. The size and weight presented no problem -- at first she leaned it on a small pillow in her lap so she wouldn't have to hold it, but after a time, she simply leans it against her knees while sitting back in her recliner. She absolutely LOVES it! The adjustable type size is a godsend and the screen readability is absolutely amazing! This device has truly added to the quality of her life and allowed her to continue her avid reading without struggle or frustration. Thank you, Amazon! This was one of the best purchases of my life and worth every penny!!! By the way, I have now purchased the new generation, smaller size Kindle for myself and will most likely have to get one for my husband!
